Massa Marittima

Massa Marittima

Massa Marittima is located in the Maremma in Tuscany approximately 50 kilometres north of Grosseto.

The term "marittima" is not tied to its location by the sea; rather Massa Marittima is located inland. The town’s name is instead owing to the fact that it belongs to the Tuscan Maremma.

A town with Etruscan origins, Massa Marittima emerges on the Colline Metallifere, or "Metal-bearing Hills", which characterised the local economy in the past.

Massa Marittima is divided into three main areas, the Città Vecchia (the old town), the Città Nuova (the new town) and the Borgo (ancient village), each with their own architectural and morphological characteristics, amongst which those particularly worth mentioning include Piazza Garibaldi, the Cathedral or "Duomo" and the Palazzo Pretorio (Magistrate's Palace).
